TÁNAISTE JOAN BURTON was raving about the latest Central Statistic Office (CSO) figures today in the Dáil, which show that the economy grew by 1.5% in the second quarter of this year.
Speaking during Leader’s Questions today, she said:
She said the figures that Ireland’s gross domestic product (GDP) is now up 7.7 per cent in the year to the end of June with gross national product (GNP) up 9 per cent were “very positive”.
No property bubble
Burton said the important thing about the latest statistics is that the recovery “is not fuelled by a property bubble like it was in the 2000s”.
“Things are actually improving… the single best thing I can do is to help get people back to work and that is what I am doing… these figures help those families,” she said, stating that a growth in the economy mean more business and more jobs for Ireland.
Burton was not the only one chuffed with the the CSO results today. Michael Noonan said it was a trend that will continue, but warned that austerity isn’t over, just yet.
